Indian beaten copper Betel nut pandan box with floral relief decoration. These containers are traditionally used across some countries in South Asia to store ingredients for preparing betel quids (paan). This set includes six original interior caddies for holding the ingredients used in the preparation of betel nut for chewing, the ingredients used are sliced areca nut, slaked lime paste, spices, and tobacco.
India has maintained a continuous tradition of copper craftsmanship from antiquity through to the modern era, producing both ritual vessels and utilitarian items. The earliest Vedic texts refer to copper as ayas, the Shukla Yajurveda explicitly identifies copper as loha (meaning “red metal”) within its list of six primary metals.
Today, although Rajasthan continues to mine copper, local production alone does not meet national demand, therefore imports significant quantities of copper to support its domestic craft and manufacturing sectors.
